Audience:
In my audience feedback on my campaign I collected some Audience primary reserach on the success of my film poster. This primary research was on freeonlinesurverys.com we did this to help us with what went better and asked questions about the genres and the films you would want to watch.
The 3 main findings were that
The first thing was that it is a horror genre and people guessed that it was by the way the film poster looks.
The second thing was the imagery they liked that it was red because it stands out from the poster and red shows danger and anger the enigma code also leaves a mystery on why the girl is on the poster and it leaves you asking questions.
This was succsessful because everyone said that they would watch the film by how it looks “I like the simplicity of it but effectiveness of it at a glance”
CONTEXT: My film poster in locations.
I think my film poster looks like a real Netflix poster because i have been careful to use the same font that neflix use and i have placed the date information in a similar way to netflix posters. My peresentation/location the real posters are below and my poster is in the same places that the real posters have been placed. My primary research found that 71.5% of my public who commented on my questionaire said that the street is the best place.
Film Trailer Feedback: Summary from my peers:
" There are many codes and conventions of horror including fast pace editing and ominous music."
" I enjoyed the choice of the music and the shots"
This links to the poster feedback and the enigma horror codes very clearly when it says about the way the pace of the film/trailer and the ominous music. The music choice and sound does "give a worrying impression that something bad is going to happen. It is " threateningly inauspicious.
"there were ominous dark clouds gathering overhead" Oxford Dictionary from google.
Mock up of my trailer on a tablet/ipad
On wevideo.com I typed up greenscreen videos and then I tried looking for the right screen in the stock videos it was hard to find a good one because most of it was cut off and wasn't long enough to fit the trailer you couldn't make it fit on most of them but I eventually found one that was useful.
I think that on the ipad my trailer looks convincing and looks realistic when you watch the clip.
Planning/Research
When i started my project i created my proposal and said what i intended on doing i
created a trailer that I described in my proposal this was that i said i would create a horror that was a Horror, tense, supernatural my poster reflects this that i did not propose the full campaign.
However, I did not talk about the film poster or my other items. As my project progressed I updated my proposal to be more detailed.
I have included extra information that has made my project easier to plan.
Things that I took away from my proposal
The film poster and the colours I picked
The idea of the missing character being a ghost having a supernatural theme
How important it will be to put the audio on the trailers and getting the right audio I found this out from my research into horror
I found my proposal to be improtant as it helped me make sure that I had a clear idea for my whole project and this is something I will do again on Level 3
I was planning and expanding my project as I went on. Using storyboardthat and post it notes also had the feedback from peers and i made changes to the look of the trailer this helped expand the look of the trailer and gave me other ideas.
Ideas from feedback and my friends
Watching trailers and looking at film posters
Learning new skills in photography and workshops for audio and photoshop
Secondary Research from the internet about films and merchandise
For my Film poster I looked at some ideas from the internet. I found IMBD https://www.imdb.com/
the best place and I looked at a variety of films. I was inspired by this one. From the Ring 2 for my poster. I liked the idea of the central ghostly figure. I set mine in at night and in a street and I included the red theme with the title.
I did this because our story is based on a real story. If you set films in real locations they are more frightening. I found this out from my research into the Horror genre. When I looked at other posters I found that Red, Black and white were common so I wanted to do the same.
“Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event or person commonly of supernatural origin into the everyday world” https://studymoose.com/media-genre-conventions-of-a-horror-film-essay
This poster cover looks like a vision of a ghost and what makes it stand out is the big ring it gives it that clue when the title of the film is called Ring Two it is like you can't keep your eye of it which that is the main thing that happens in the film once someone watches the clip of the ring they get possesed by the evil spirit. This shows that in my trailer the girl that is on my front cover on my poster is sort of faded away because I chose to make it look like the ring two poster and that gave me the idea of fading the girl on to it.
I would say that my story is more of a Paranormal Mystery. With more questions than answers. Why is he missing? Where is he? What is in the woods? Why can’t they find him? So we have used some of the elements from the paranormal idea of horror and mixed it with what we have seen in films like The Blair Witch and Cloverfield about Witches, folk law and the supernatural.
Horror Films “deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality” https://www.filmsite.org/horrorfilms.html
Our character Tony is lost, he is missing and nobody knows where he is. The idea of searching for him would be promoted through social media. Using merchandising, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is part of our real word and promotions via mobile phone as well as putting posters in the street would help raise awareness for the film.
Time Plan and my organisation of work
My Time plan was useful because i met up to the expectations on the table and all my work i am up to date with each part i will be completing before the deadline. This helped a lot because each step I worked through was a lot more easier and it helped with what type of genre I did and what it is all about and what inspired me to make this trailer with the horror genre in it it was so much better having a time plan because each step was more easier to follow than looking at different things and it all being mixed up instead of the small steps.
Is the production and planning substantial and does it reflect 10 weeks of work?
Yes the planning is a big part and it is most of the work put together I have done the storyboardthat planning, presspack planning, Contingency and weather, time plan, pre production, planning my trailer, mood board and ideas for film poster, contributor permissions, spider diagrams, review of the shoot and job roles in film production there is also much more planning i have done which is 10 weeks worth including research and presentation so the time plan helps a lot because i should be up to date with everything and i should be meeting to that deadline.
Did you use your planning as you were creating your project?
Yes most of the planning I had to check up on just so some of the things were right and I checked every step so i knew what i was doing and it helped me a lot because then I would have an idea of what i was doing for each bit instead of not doing any planning and being stuck on each topic.
What was useful to you?
- Scripts
- Storyboards
- Character details
These three things were the most useful because the scripts helped with knowing what to say when we are filming and if we forget we can just then check the script on the sheet then retake the scene we struggled on doing. The storyboards were useful because it gives us more of a picture and the basic things that happen in all the scenes which is good and it helps a lot for each part of the scenes including the animation part of it so we can get more of an example of what the location will look like and how many people are on each part of the scene. And the final one the character details are great for telling you what type of characteristics they are and what they will be doing in most of the trailer including there real name and there fake name for the trailer/film.
Production skills
How well do you believe your production followed the conventions of your production genre or style ?
I think it went really well I followed everything on the list and kept it looking like the genre I picked also the poster I made has a very dark sinister look to it which is good for the horror genre as well as my moodboards and press pack it all follows the style of horror and all of the plans and everything else on top of it links up to the main thing it is about which is horror.
The research on this poster i did was just a practice example and it wasn't the real thing but I edited it out on photoshop and made most of the background darker so it looked creepy I also used red because it is the sign of danger and it stands out with the grunge font so I used the same font on my final poster and made the background look just like a faded ghost so it linked up to the actul name of the film.
Solutions to any problems that came up during the production of the project
The main thing I struggled with the most is making the animation storyboard on storyboardthat.com because once I finished each scene and put all the background in with the animated characters on it each part was difficult cause each scene changed places so I had to re do most scenes and edit the backgrounds and the characters out again just because each scene number swapped around so that was the only hard part about it and it took a lot of time to get it perfect so it could help everyone in the group whilst we film.
Development of skills your project journey
As you have completed your media project what skills have you developed?
New things I have learned and found out is testing my skills on photoshop and getting to learn different things I never learnt before to make my posters look good and for it to stand out more I have also found out new websites that help me out with editing posters and videos including my press kit so whenever I want to make a stylish information press kit on anything then I can pick my own designs on it and with posters I can pick the background then my own type of font to go on to it. My filming skills have gone so much better and I know how to edit the short trailers I make with the music in the background so it all looks right and sounds right and I never knew how to do that before I joined this course so it is very helpful to learn for the future.
How have you done this?
Most of the trailer I edited it out on wevideo.com and added all the audio on to it to make it all come together and it fits with the whole genre as well which is the main thing that actually matters each transition I used was a quick white flash so then it gives the trailer more tension when you watch it and then it leaves the public wanting to know what happens next. On photoshop it was easy to edit the posters and it also looked good when I used the fonts on it especially the colour that I picked because it stands out more which attracts more attention on to the poster.
How is it useful?
It is useful because new things that I have learnt on photoshop and we video I never knew how to do any of it until I got taught how to do most of the new skills on there and it is very good especially for the future because I could then use it for what I want to do in university and it will present my work in a good way if i ever need to use any of these development skills so I can then plan my work whenever I need to.
What would you do differently next time if you had the opportunity to produce the project again?
I would re take some more shots and make sure they were clear and think of more ideas to put in to the shot I also would change the starting of my trailer because the title should move instead of it being still and then it would make the trailer a lot better if the title moved.
Do you believe you did your production justice?
Yes it also meets up to the standards and everything I have put in to the planning and the whole genre which is horror all of it is very dark the theme and the posters I edited out on photoshop were very dark as well so it fitted with the whole ghosted theme and the trailer brought tension due to the fast pace transitions I added in it helped make the trailer quicker and the music just goes with it so everything works well together which is good the planning helps a lot as well so it all works out and meets up to the standards of the production justice.
